Saturday Silversmithery – Copper and Fine Silver Cuff Bracelet

Much fun had yesterday in the studio, fusing fine silver to copper to make this bracelet. I love the contrast and texture and the range of colours that copper produces when heat is applied.
This isn’t quite finished as I want to file and carve out a few areas so that it isn’t so uniform in shape.

How do you fuse fine silver to copper? I’ve been trying to fuse fine silver metal clay filings to a cleaned and pickled piece of copper, but nothing happens. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Tammi, I burr up the surface first, so that both metals ‘bite’, add flux, and then use a very high flame. There isn’t a great deal of control over your silver because of the different melting points of both metals, but I flame until the silver runs. And I’ve had days where this method just does not work for me either. Sometimes I will add a small amount of silver solder paste, depending on the area I want to fuse, which helps it grab. Let me know how you go with it!

Kitty – thanks for getting back to me. I will give it a shot and let you know.
